What is your opinion of the CAMU

Note: This and the following comments were moved over from a discontinued poll on August 18,2008.

It is my understanding that legal provisions have been made that "FMC is responsible for the CAMU in perpetuity". That is, even if FMC went out of existence (not only in Middleport but worldwide) that FMC has monies set aside in some kind of "trust fund" to take care of the CAMU FOREVER. Someone out there....correct my understanding if I am wrong

The responsibility that FMC will forever have is for the entire plant site, not just the CAMU, water system etc. It is the entire plant that FMC is regulated to provide fiscal responsibility for if they ever leave Middleport.

This is correct, FMC is suppose to maintain the CAMU forever. But what really will happen 50, 100, 200 years from now. The CAMU itself will be a mound of dirt covered with vegetation. There probably will not be a problem with dust. The leaching into ground water may be different. FMC justifies using no bottom liner by the fact they have a water extraction system installed at the northern side of the proposed CAMU area. This system consists of pumps, pipe lines and water purification equipment. This is elaborate and expensive. Who maintains this after FMC is gone and the money set aside is used up?

Remember this CAMU, if approved by the government agencies and implemented by FMC, will be here forever; long after we are gone and maybe even after FMC is no longer in existence.
